About Ridgebacks, and us
This site is dedicated to the Rhodesian Ridgback because we own them ourselves and have been involved with the breed on various levels for about 10 years.
We have had good fortune, and bad - we have seen all kinds of scenarios - especially with unscrupulous breeders, preying on people’s ignorance about the breed. The fact is, there are not that many good breeders out there. Perhaps a handful in the whole country. That doesn’t mean that the marginal breeders mean to be bad. It is just that this breed requires experience. And not just breeding experience.
The best advice we can give is this. If you are looking for a family companion, do not buy from anywhere other than from someone that shows their dogs in AKC sanctioned events. Such breeders always have family companions that are not meant for showing, and this is the best of both worlds for you. You get a very attractive dog, and the health and temperament are unequaled.
Show people are the most rigid in their standards, vocal about protecting the breed, and sacrifice the most to protect the dog. You cannot go wrong.
Finally, don’t insult these people by expecting to pay a pittance for a nice animal. An average price for a nice Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy is anywhere from 1300.00 - 1700.00. Bite the bullet and pay it. Otherwise you may find out - as hundreds of others have - that the initial cost is nothing compared to the heart wrenching and financial distress that can come from not acquiring a puppy from top breeder due to health issues, or unsatisfactory quality.
Take it from us, you will never regret the years of peace of mind you will get from having a quality Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy from a quality breeder.
